Mnemba Island offers a unique playground for water enthusiasts, showcasing a wide range of fun and exhilarating water activities for all ages.

Whether you’re a seasoned water sports fan or a beginner looking to try something new, there’s an abundance of opportunities to create long lasting island memories. From thrilling water adventures like sea kayaking and sailing to more leisurely experiences like SUPing and pedal boarding, there’s something for everyone. The island’s calm waters and pristine beaches provide the perfect setting for unforgettable experiences.

  • Snorkeling at Mnemba Island

Explore the island’s surrounding waters at your own pace

Witness the technicoloured marine life of Mnemba Island

Snorkelling is an effortless way to explore Mnemba’s underwater wonderland. With a mask, snorkel and fins, either set out by boat to discover the surrounding reefs or simply step into the ocean from the shore. The House Reef and coral nursery offer remarkable snorkelling just offshore, while boat trips open up even more of Mnemba’s vibrant marine world.

The azure waters of the surrounding marine conservation area ensure that Mnemba Island is a year-round snorkelling destination. Embrace the unspoilt beauty of the reef and the kaleidoscopic colours of the tropical fish that move in droves along the exposed coral. The reefs around the island are generally shallow, making them suitable for snorkelers of all levels. They are also sheltered from strong currents, providing a relatively calm snorkelling environment.

  • Scuba diving at Mnemba Island

Beautifully clear, warm water, boasting an abundance of marine life makes diving here an idyllic spot for beginner and advanced divers alike

Highly regarded as one of the best waters to explore, it comes as no surprise that the glorious diving spots in and around &Beyond Mnemba Island have been included in many top dive site lists across the globe. Catering for every diver, from novice to experienced, Mnemba Island’s dive sites vary in topography, substrate and marine life, making for an exclusive and varied underwater adventure like no other.

With most dive sites a short 10 to 20-minute boat ride from the island – a few of which can even be dived directly from shore; our PADI-certified dive masters and instructors know the reefs around Mnemba Island intimately and take divers to sites best suited to their specific interests. For non-divers, an introductory PADI Discover Scuba Diving course is available, providing the incredible opportunity to see the vast majority of what the islet has to offer in the first 12 m (40 ft) of water. Other PADI-certified experiences and courses for divers from ages eight and up are also on offer.

The shallow sea grass patches, sandy slopes and coral reefs just off the beach are a haven for critters. Robust ghost pipe fish, leaf fish, harlequin crabs and even zebra snout seahorses are just a few of the incredible oceanic beings to be seen, as well as various eels, shrimp, scorpion fish and octopus. Further from shore, coral walls drop drastically from the surface into the depths. While Mnemba Island is not commonly known for larger sea creatures, lucky divers may catch a glimpse of grey reef shark, giant grouper or other denizens of the deep on occasion.

A combination of wild naval landscapes, the bounty of sultry ocean currents, and an abundance of aquatic life, makes Mnemba Island a truly world-class scuba diving destination.

  • Green turtle nesting adventure

Enjoy the unforgettable experience of watching green turtle hatchlings as they find their way out of their sandy nests and crawl to the ocean.

This excursion begins with guests meeting for sundowners and an introduction to nesting, tag data, weather and the challenging factors hatchlings face. We discuss why &Beyond nurtures these hatchlings and how we help to deter predators, gather data to observe how effective &Beyond Mnemba Island is as a nesting site and how we allow them a more natural start to their journey.

Only one in 1 000 make it to adulthood and it takes roughly 20 years or more before they reach sexual maturity and can start reproducing.

Learn about turtle etiquette, the sensitive ways the turtles are approached, and the conservation aspect: it has taken two decades of dedicated research and monitoring to make this conservation experience possible.

Hatching is a year-round possibility that generally peaks between February and March; however, as hatchings cannot be guaranteed, this experience is not available to pre-book.

  • Mnemba Island coral reefs stars project

    Dive into coral conservation.

Imagine helping to stabilise a broken reef and watching life return. On this interactive experience, you’ll play a hands-on role in restoring &Beyond Mnemba Island’s coral ecosystem by participating in the final steps of creating your own hexagonal reef star and attaching living coral fragments nurtured in the Mnemba Island coral nursery.

Following a short introduction at the Ocean Without Borders (OWB) Discovery Centre*, you’ll learn how these small reef stars fast-track reef recovery by stabilising loose coral rubble left behind by global bleaching events. You’ll then join the OWB marine rangers to attach coral fragments to your reef star, either from the shoreline or in shallow water, depending on your comfort level.

Your completed reef star is then transferred by boat to a protected restoration site within the Mnemba Island Marine Special Area (MIMSA). Guests may choose to accompany** the team to snorkel, free dive or dive to witness its placement approximately 6 m (20 ft) below the surface. The deployment is filmed, so whether you join the boat or remain on shore, you’ll receive footage of your reef star settling into its new underwater home. In time, the coral fragments will grow across the structure, creating shelter for fish and encouraging natural coral recruitment. What begins as rubble becomes reef once more.

This experience must be booked in advance (can be booked once on the island) and is subject to the availability of the OWB and marine ranger teams. As with all ocean-based activities, participation is weather dependent.

*Guest participation in this experience includes a Wild Impact OWB programme donation.

**Scuba diving participation requires Open Water certification. No diving certification is required for the shoreline assembly experience.

  • Mnemba Island Conservation Tour

Gain an insight into Mnemba’s delicate ecosystem

This one-to-two-hour interactive island experience promises a fascinating glimpse into significant conservation efforts on &Beyond Mnemba Island and the behind-the-scenes workings that come with it. You’ll witness the dedication of the marine rangers and staff members, gaining an insight into the island’s delicate ecosystem.

Your tour begins with an introduction to Mnemba’s long-term green sea turtle monitoring programme, one of the most extensive in the Indian Ocean. The island provides a safe haven for these magnificent creatures to nest, and you’ll have the unique opportunity to see exactly where these nests can be found on the island. Here, the rangers will explain how they meticulously track the nests using tick charts, predicting hatch dates with remarkable accuracy. If luck is on your side, witnessing a turtle hatching would be a highlight of your trip, and not something easily forgotten.

The island’s indigenous tree nursery is another stop on your tour. Here, you’ll learn about the collaborative efforts with the Department of Forestry to cultivate indigenous trees. You’ll also discover the reasoning behind removing casuarinas, a non-indigenous species found on the island that disrupts its natural ecosystem.

Next up, is the sandbag erosion wall. While the specifics of the project might be a bit technical, you’ll gain a clear understanding of the problem’s history, causes, and potential consequences as well as the team’s continuous efforts to mitigate erosion, protecting the future of the island.

The discussion will then shift to the island’s suni and Aders’ duiker population, which has grown considerably in recent years, as well as the purpose behind the exclusion zone. You’ll learn about the challenges this poses and the collaborative strategies to address it.

This land-based island experience is ideal for non-divers and must be booked in advance (can be booked once on the island). Subject to availability of the Oceans Without Borders (OWB) and marine ranger teams and weather dependent.

  • Mnemba Island community visit

Private, personal and participative; this half-day experience offers you the opportunity to explore local village life beyond the crowds on Zanzibar Island and interact with transformative education* and healthcare community projects. You will be hosted by Wild Impact, &Beyond’s long-term community and conservation development partner; for over 25 years &Beyond and Wild Impact (formerly Africa Foundation) have worked together with Zanzibari partner communities and other stakeholders on projects supporting education, healthcare, enterprise development and marine conservation.

Your experience will start with a boat transfer across from Mnemba Island to Muyuni beach; here you will be met by Bakari, your community visit host, and hop into your private vehicle for the morning’s excursion. Following a short drive to the village of Mbuyutende, which lies outside busy tourist surrounds, you’ll leave the vehicle for a gentle 30-minute stroll; a window on local community life that will take you past local fruit and market stalls and which will end at the house of Pandu, &Beyond Butler. Under the welcoming shade of a tree, you’ll be invited to share some fresh seasonal fruit, juice and “chapatti” breads prepared by Pandu’s wife. Your vehicle will be there with some additional refreshments.

From this stop, a short drive will take you past the Kijini School and then 5 km (3.1 mi) along a quiet dirt road to the Mlimboni Primary School, one of our current education development projects. Before the establishment of Mlimboni (originally known as Kimbembe Preprimary), learners had to walk to and from the Kijini School every day. At Mlimboni you will have the opportunity to learn a little more about the school from the principal, wander the school grounds and participate in an interactive ECHO environmental education lesson conducted by Wild Impact teaching stewards.

From the school, you’ll be driven to Matemwe village, stopping enroute at Pandu (yes, another Pandu) the weaver’s small shop on the side of the road, where he will have some items on sale. At Matemwe village, which is a lot busier than Mbuyutende, you’ll drive past Matemwe School (where Bakari was a pupil) and visit the Matemwe Health Centre and maternity ward; this Wild Impact project pays testimony to the fundamental importance of a community healthcare facility.

Enjoy a fresh coconut or sugar cane juice from the Matemwe market, before the short drive back to Muyuni beach and your return to the island for lunch.

*The education touchpoints of this experience may change out of school time / school terms. This experience must be booked in advance (can be booked once on the island) and is subject to the availability of the Wild Impact Project Officer. Guest participation in this experience includes a Wild Impact project donation.

Thrown into this heady mix, are those areas where a variety of intriguing plants and shrubs including the iodine plant, henna bush, ylang ylang, and the red fruit of the lipstick tree are grown for medicinal purposes and cosmetics. Your senses will be tantalised by the sight, smell, and taste of an exotic cocktail of tropical seasonal fruits, such as green coconut juice, jack fruit, pineapple, banana, and love apple.

The tour also includes a visit to:

    • The ancient Kidichi Persian Baths, built in 1850 by the first Sultan of Zanzibar, Sultan Seyyid Said. They were created for his beloved Persian wife, Princess Scheherezade, granddaughter of the Shah of Persia.

    • The fascinating Maruhubi Palace ruins, once home to 99 of the concubines of the third Sultan of Zanzibar, Seyyid Barghash.

    • Livingstone’s House, home to the great explorer and anti-slavery campaigner, Dr David Livingstone, until he left for his final expedition in 1866.

  • The history of Stone Town

Delve into the beauty and ancient history of Zanzibar on this fascinating Stone Town walking tour. Explore magnificent architecture, a labyrinth of bustling narrow alleys, and incredible sand and coral-stone houses, some over 200 years old, with intricately carved Arab and Indian doors. During this walking tour, your guide will recount Stone Town’s history (a mix of Indian, African, Arabic, and European influences) and provide a window onto Swahili culture and everyday life in Zanzibar.

Our tour begins at Darajani Market, the main city market, which was opened in 1904. Here an abundance of colourful tropical fruits, vegetables, aromatic spices, and fresh fish from the island are haggled over, bartered, and sold, while you can buy a host of other souvenirs and local specialties from the stalls surrounding the market area.

Other highlights on our historical Stone Town walking tour are visits to:

    • The Christ Church Anglican Cathedral, built by Bishop Edward Steere in 1873, on the site of the Old Slave Market

    • The Sultan’s Palace Museum (Beit al-Sahel), also known as the People’s Palace, built in the 1890’s for members of the Royal Sultan’s family

    • The House of Wonders (Beit-el-Ajaib), constructed in 1883 as a royal ceremonial function palace

    • The historic Africa House Hotel, the site of the English Club in 1888

    • The ocean-facing Jamituri (Forodhani) Gardens: a perfect spot for evening sundowners with a lively street-food market.

Note: It is advisable to dress conservatively when walking through Stone Town. Women should cover their shoulders, wear long skirts or trousers, and men should wear pants. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

Follow the winding narrow streets full of bazaars, churches and mosques. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is ideally located in the old section of Zanzibar City, the main city of the archipelago.

You will get a chance to experience how local dishes are cooked using the island’s variety of spices and coconut milk. There’ll be time to browse the busy markets, filled with African and Asian-inspired trinkets, aromatic herbs, and clothing. Perhaps you might choose to visit a traditional dhow construction site, or a local school. Your tour will end with a visit to the Stone Town Heritage Society, dedicated to conserving, sustaining, and restoring Zanzibar’s built environment and heritage. This personalized tour will provide the opportunity to visit different parts of the island, and experience the cultural diversity of Zanzibar’s evolution, history, arts and cuisine.

  • Visiting Prison Island

Take a fascinating step back in time, and visit Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, a short boat ride away from Zanzibar. In the 1860’s, this island was used to confine unruly slaves before they were sold off to slave markets or shipped abroad. Lloyd Mathews, the British First Minister of Zanzibar, constructed a prison complex here when he purchased the island in 1983, however it was never used for this purpose, but as a quarantine hospital for yellow fever cases. A highlight of your visit will be the Aldabra giant tortoise sanctuary. These majestic tortoises, some over a 100 years old, were originally a gift from the British Governor of the Seychelles. Spend time sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and enjoy the tranquility of the island. A boat trip from Stone Town to the island takes 30 minutes.
